High-Conflict Divorce: Managing Difficult Cases

Some couples become embroiled in a high-conflict divorce. In these situations, there are various considerations you should make.

Control Communication with Your Spouse

There are times when you may need to contact your spouse. Speaking face-to-face or over the phone can be too stressful. Instead, contact them via email or have your lawyer handle communications on your behalf.

Keep all communication with your spouse neutral. Don’t seek to provoke them. Do not respond negatively if they try to get a rise out of you. Stick to the facts and control your emotions as much as possible.

Don’t Disparage Your Spouse in Front of Your Children

Some people are tempted to vent their frustrations to their children. This can have a profoundly negative impact on a child’s mental and emotional well-being. It can also affect their relationship with both of their parents. As the saying goes, If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.

Use Mediation Services

When making arrangements for children or property, try using a mediator to come to an agreement. Even if you’re not on good terms with your spouse, agreeing on arrangements is better than opting for litigation.
